Crawford's Wrist Injury Sidelines Mariners' Lineup Anchor for Two Weeks
Seattle loses its best contact hitter at a critical stretch with a replacement hitting .131 in the majors this season.

The Seattle Mariners placed J.P. Crawford on the 10-day injured list Friday with left wrist inflammation sustained during a swing, removing their most reliable bat from the lineup ahead of a series against Minnesota. The third baseman, 31, will sit out three to five days of baseball activity and receive an injection before a gradual ramp-up. General manager Justin Hollander estimated a two-week absence, a timeline that carries weight given Crawford's durability history—this marks his third IL stint in 2026 alone, following a right shoulder injury in spring and a right hand contusion in June.
Crawford's absence arrives at a particularly costly moment. He's hitting .212 with 30 RBIs across 87 games, numbers that understate his offensive value; his strikeout rate and contact quality suggest he's been the Mariners' most disciplined hitter despite the low average. His 10 home runs rank third on the team. The Mariners will turn to Weston Wilson at third base and have recalled infielder Leo Rivas from Triple-A Tacoma—a move that exposes a roster depth problem. Rivas is hitting .131 in 38 major-league games this season and posted a .732 OPS with 13 games at Triple-A. That's a meaningful downgrade in both plate discipline and power production.
The timing compounds the damage. With the trade deadline hours away and the Mariners likely in seller mode, losing Crawford to an injury that could linger (hand and wrist injuries have a reputation for recurrence in baseball) weakens their negotiating position and removes a veteran presence from the clubhouse. If Hollander's two-week estimate holds, Crawford would return in early-to-mid August, but wrist inflammation can be stubborn; injections often buy time rather than solve the problem permanently.
For bettors, the Mariners' run-scoring environment shifts immediately. Crawford was carrying much of the offensive load against right-handed pitching; his absence and Rivas's replacement create a measurable drop in expected runs per game. The Twins series (Friday through Sunday at minimum) becomes a favorable spot for Minnesota's pitching staff. Bet the Twins to win games where Crawford remains sidelined; Seattle's lineup loses its best two-strike contact hitter, and Rivas—without the minor-league track record to justify confidence—figures to produce strikeouts and weak contact in his stead. The Mariners' team run total should trade lower across this stretch.
