Rays Bring Back Cleavinger, Cut Ties With Gomez in Bullpen Reset

Tampa Bay has designated right-hander Yoendrys Gomez for assignment and activated reliever Garrett Cleavinger off the 15-day IL, per the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. The move is a two-for-one roster correction: it clears a 40-man spot for future use while plugging Cleavinger back into a bullpen that has been patching holes all spring.

Gomez, 25, came over from the Yankees organization with a live arm and a repertoire that plays better in theory than in practice. His command issues — chronic elevated walk rates and a tendency to miss over the plate when he tries to compensate — made him a liability in tight spots. The Rays don't carry passengers in their bullpen, and Gomez never stuck around long enough to earn trust in high-leverage situations. The DFA is less a surprise than a formality.

Cleavinger is a different profile entirely. The left-handed reliever sits 94-96 with a slider that gives left-handed hitters genuine problems — career .198 average against lefties. He's not a closer, but he's a functional multi-inning piece in a Tampa Bay system that runs its bullpen by committee better than almost anyone in the American League. Getting him back healthy matters because the Rays have been leaning on arms that were never meant to carry this volume.

From a betting standpoint, Cleavinger's return strengthens the back end of Tampa Bay's pitching staff in a way that tilts toward unders. The Rays have been one of the better under teams in the AL when their full bullpen complement is available — their ability to limit opponent scoring in the sixth through ninth innings is a real edge. With Cleavinger absorbing left-on-left matchups and relieving pressure on the rest of the unit, Tampa Bay team totals and opponent team totals both deserve a harder look on the under side. The first-five-innings market may be less affected, but game totals set in the 7.5–8.5 range with this bullpen at full strength are worth targeting.
