Gabriel Moreno — Gabriel Moreno Returns to Arizona Lineup — and the D-backs' Team Total Just Got More Interesting

As ESPN reported, the Arizona Diamondbacks activated catcher Gabriel Moreno from the 10-day injured list Friday, slotting him directly into the starting lineup for the opener of their weekend series against the Cubs in Chicago. Moreno had been out since April 10 with a strained left oblique — a core injury that, when it lingers, can quietly sap a hitter's bat speed and plate discipline even after activation. Friday's 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in a 6-5 loss wasn't the return anyone scripted, but the roster move itself matters more than one cold game.

Manager Torey Lovullo didn't hide his enthusiasm before first pitch, calling Moreno "very dynamic" and pointing to the quality of his at-bats, his ability to control the running game, and his overall command of a pitching staff. That's not boilerplate praise — it reflects a real structural gap Arizona had been playing through. The catchers who filled in while Moreno was out offered serviceable defense but none of the offensive profile that makes Moreno one of the better hitting catchers in the NL. Through 14 games this season he's slashing .244 with five RBI, modest counting numbers that understate how much he elevates the bottom third of a lineup with plate awareness and contact ability.

The Diamondbacks also recalled left-hander Brandyn Garcia from Triple-A Reno, designating Aramis Garcia and optioning Philip Abner to clear roster space. Brandyn Garcia — acquired in the Josh Naylor trade — threw two perfect innings Friday and brings a strikeout-heavy profile (18 Ks in 12⅓ innings at Reno) that gives Lovullo a legitimate leverage weapon out of the bullpen. That's a meaningful bullpen upgrade for a club whose late-inning run prevention has been inconsistent early in 2026.

From a betting standpoint, Moreno's return is a quiet but real upgrade to Arizona's run-scoring potential. The D-backs' team total has been a market that sharp bettors have been hesitant to attack on the over given the lineup patchwork, but a healthy Moreno improves the floor. He's the kind of hitter who extends innings and keeps at-bat quality high in spots where other catchers simply make outs. Watch for Arizona's team total lines — currently sitting in the 4–4.5 range against mid-tier starters — to attract more over action as the lineup stabilizes. His RBI and hits props are also worth monitoring as he shakes off rust over the next week; oblique injuries can suppress power output early in a return, so targeting lower total-bases numbers (under 1.5) in his first few games back offers value against a market that may price him at full health immediately.

The Garcia bullpen addition compounds the effect on the other side of the ledger. A reliever who can punch out hitters regardless of handedness tightens Arizona's late-inning run prevention, which strengthens the case for first-five-inning unders when Arizona's starters are shaky — and makes opposing team totals slightly more dangerous to back in the late innings. The roster is cleaner today than it was Thursday, and the market hasn't fully caught up.
