Zack Wheeler Is Back and the Phillies Are Rolling — Here's How to Bet Wednesday's Total
By Justin Erickson ·
A returning ace, a managerial spark, and a reeling Athletics lineup walk into Citizens Bank Park — and the market hasn't fully priced it in.
Zack Wheeler takes the mound Wednesday evening against the visiting Athletics with Philadelphia riding one of the hottest stretches in the National League. As CBS Sports reported, Wheeler — a three-time All-Star who missed more than eight months following thoracic outlet surgery — has looked increasingly sharp in his two-start return, and the Phillies have gone 7-1 under interim skipper Don Mattingly since parting ways with Rob Thomson. First pitch is 6:40 p.m. ET at Citizens Bank Park.
Wheeler's velocity is tracking slightly below his career norms — his sinker averaged 94.5 mph last Friday in Miami against the Marlins, down from a 95.4 mph baseline in 2025 — but the spin and command were crisp enough to generate 14 swings and misses from the third through the sixth inning alone. He's operating at 94 pitches through six innings, which suggests a pitch-count governor still in place as his shoulder works back to full load. Projections peg him for 5.9 innings and 7.2 strikeouts Wednesday, and that number will likely drift upward as his workload cap expands. The Athletics, currently struggling against quality starting pitching, give Wheeler a favorable matchup to extend his strikeout output.
The broader Philadelphia pitching revival is the real story here. When Thomson was fired, the Phillies' staff ERA sat at a bloated 5.80 — worst in baseball. Over the past eight games under Mattingly, starters have posted a 1.53 ERA while striking out 57 and walking just 10 in 47 innings. That's not a hot streak — that's a structural correction. Wheeler slotting into the top of the order has cascaded down the rotation, pushing Aaron Nola and Jesús Luzardo into better groove positions and excising the volatile Taijuan Walker entirely. Cristopher Sanchez went eight innings Tuesday night against these same Athletics. The Oakland bats are walking into a buzzsaw.
On the prop side, Wheeler's strikeout line deserves attention. At 7.2 projected punchouts and still operating with a pitch-count ceiling near 95, the over on a K prop set between 5.5 and 6.5 carries real value — especially against an Athletics lineup that isn't punishing mistake pitches. The Athletics counter with lefty Jeffrey Springs (3-2, 3.96 ERA), whose inconsistency makes the Philadelphia team total an attractive angle as well. The Phillies' lineup has been locked in, and Springs has been pulled early in rough outings this season. Targeting the Phillies team total over — particularly in the first five innings — aligns with both the matchup and recent form.
The alt under on the full-game total also has teeth. Wheeler is unlikely to let this game get into high-scoring territory, and if Springs keeps it competitive for three-plus innings, a lower combined number is well within reach. The parlay construction of Phillies moneyline plus an alt under on the total reflects the game's true shape: a dominant home starter, a surging bullpen, and a visitor's offense that has done little to suggest it can get to a pitcher with Wheeler's reset command. Bet accordingly.
