In corresponding paperwork, the team waived wide receiver Jalen Walthall, who had signed with Houston in May.

Hansen produced at UConn with 46 catches, 463 yards, and four touchdowns across three seasons before transferring, and he also spent two years at Michigan prior to his move to the Huskies. His college resume—solid but unspectacular by NFL tight end standards—reflects the profile of a long-shot developmental prospect rather than an immediate contributor. The fact that Houston needed a minicamp showcase to evaluate him rather than selecting him in the draft underscores the organizational view: he's a camp body with upside potential, not a solution to a positional weakness.

For the Texans' receiving setup, this move is functionally neutral. Houston already carries Kyle Pitts as their primary pass-catching tight end, with established backups ahead of Hansen on the depth chart. Hansen's role through training camp will center on earning his way into a reserve spot—a realistic but uncertain proposition in a crowded room. Wide receiver depth takes a minor hit with Walthall's waiver, though the team's pass-catching arsenal remains headlined by Stefon Diggs and their established core.

From a betting perspective, Hansen's addition carries no material implication for season-long tight end receiving props. Pitts' target share and red-zone work—the primary levers for tight end overs in this offense—remain unchanged. Houston's Week 1 passing volume and spread pricing should reflect the same offensive architecture that existed before Thursday's roster adjustment.
