Dolphins Audition White as Achane Backup, but Carries Offer Limited Prop Leverage

The Dolphins worked out free agent running back Zamir White this offseason, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, as Miami evaluates depth options behind starter De'Von Achane. White, a 2022 fourth-round pick, has seen his offensive role collapse over the past 18 months, falling from 549 yards from scrimmage in 2023 to just 213 in 2024 and bottoming out at 12 rushing attempts last season with the Raiders. The audition reflects Miami's need to add experienced reserve depth, but it also underscores White's diminished standing in NFL backfields.

White's trajectory is instructive: when Josh Jacobs departed Las Vegas for Green Bay before 2024, the organization had internal conviction White could inherit lead-back volume. Instead, he lost the job to journeymen Alexander Mattison and Ameer Abdullah, then fell further down the depth chart when the Raiders added Ashton Jeanty and Raheem Mostert in 2025. That three-year collapse from 119 touches to 12 is not a single-injury anomaly—it's a pattern of coaches declining to trust him with offensive snaps. Even his special teams contributions (11 kickoff returns last season) read as organizational filler rather than a pathway to meaningful backfield touches.

Miami's backfield composition—Achane, Jaylen Wright, Ollie Gordon, and now White in potential audition form—mirrors the same committee structure that buried him in Vegas. The Dolphins are not signing White because they believe he's a 3-down option; they're kicking the tires on a depth-chart floor piece who might eat a few carries in game flow and anchor the kickoff return unit. Gordon and Wright are younger and have recent draft capital behind them. White arrives as a competing option for scraps.

For prop betting purposes, White's volume ceiling in Miami remains constrained. Even if he makes the roster, Achane's 247-carry season in 2024 sets the ceiling for total backfield deployment. White would need both injury to Achane AND displacement of both Gordon and Wright to approach 100 carries—a tail-risk scenario that the Dolphins' depth-chart moves explicitly de-prioritize. The market will price any White season-long props (rushing yards, carries) with zero volume confidence, and that pricing will be correct. Single-game props tied to White's touch count belong in the fade bin unless Miami enters a blowout script where backup commodity usage becomes inevitable.
