Franz Wagner Out for Game 7: Cade Cunningham Is Now a Must-Play Prop

Franz Wagner is out for Game 7 in Detroit. The Orlando Magic confirmed Sunday that the forward's right calf strain — first suffered in the third quarter of Game 4 — will sideline him for a third consecutive game in what is now an elimination matchup against the Pistons. Orlando's season is on the line, and its best two-way weapon won't be on the floor.

The numbers behind Wagner's absence are not subtle. As ESPN reported, when Wagner was the primary defender on Cade Cunningham through the first four games of this series, the Pistons' star scored just 17 total points on 6-of-24 shooting, including a brutal 3-of-16 from three. Cunningham also turned the ball over six times in that stretch. That is not a slump — that is a defender taking someone out of a series.

Then Wagner went down. In Games 5 and 6, Cunningham has averaged 38.5 points while shooting 50% from the field and 58% from beyond the arc. The Magic have lost both games. The transformation is as complete as it gets in playoff basketball — one injury flipped Cunningham from a liability into the most dangerous guard in the first round. Orlando's remaining perimeter defenders simply do not have the length, instincts, or lateral quickness to replicate what Wagner was doing defensively.

For Sunday's game, the prop market on Cunningham deserves serious attention. His point totals in Games 5 and 6 were 35 and 42 — and oddsmakers will set a line that tries to split the difference between his first-four-game disappearing act and this two-game explosion. That line is likely to land somewhere in the 30–33 point range, and given that nothing about Orlando's Wagner-less defensive scheme has changed, the over is the obvious lean. Beyond raw points, Cunningham's assists and PRA numbers are also elevated without Wagner forcing him into a ball-handler-in-a-cage role — he's operating freely in pick-and-roll and creating for teammates at a much higher rate.

Wagner himself was averaging 16.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.8 steals in the series, making him one of the few players generating value across nearly every prop category on both sides of the ball. His absence removes a multi-category contributor from Orlando's stat sheet and collapses the defensive structure that made this series competitive in the first place. Game 7 props on Magic role players — Jalen Suggs, Paolo Banchero shot creation, team total — should all be approached with caution. Detroit plays at home, Cunningham is locked in, and Orlando is running out of answers.
