Embiid Questionable Again: Why the Knicks-Sixers Game 3 Total Is the Sharpest Bet on the Board

When a 300-pound center is a coin-flip to play and both rosters are banged up, the over/under becomes the most important number in the building.

Embiid Questionable Again: Why the Knicks-Sixers Game 3 Total Is the Sharpest Bet on the Board

Joel Embiid is questionable again for Game 3 of the Knicks-76ers first-round series, and that single designation is doing a lot of heavy lifting on the betting board. The big man was a surprise scratch for Game 2 — a game Philadelphia lost — and with the series shifting to Xfinity Mobile Arena on Friday night, the 76ers need him. New York holds a 2-0 lead, and Philly is staring down a 3-0 hole if things go sideways at home. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET, with Philadelphia installed as a -1.5 favorite on FanDuel and the total sitting at 213.5.

The injury picture extends well beyond Embiid. Josh Hart (thumb) and OG Anunoby (hamstring) are both questionable for New York, which means two of the Knicks' most important two-way contributors could be limited or absent. Hart is central to New York's rebounding identity and defensive energy off the bench; Anunoby is their best perimeter stopper and a secondary scoring option. Lose both, and Tom Thibodeau's rotation gets thin fast. Add Embiid's status on the other end, and you're looking at a game where the two most significant offensive hubs are operating at reduced capacity or not at all.

Game 2 produced just 210 combined points — already under the current 213.5 number — and that game presumably had a healthier roster picture than what Friday presents. Philadelphia ranked in the bottom third of the league in offensive rating over stretches of this season, and without Embiid to generate easy looks in the paint and draw fouls, the Sixers become a perimeter-dependent team that lives and dies by jump-shot variance. New York's half-court defense under Thibodeau already suppresses pace and limits transition opportunities. These are not conditions that produce offensive fireworks.

The total is the play here, and the under at 213.5 is the clearest edge on the slate. Both franchises finished the regular season with 54% of their games settling under their respective totals — a convergence of trends that rarely shows up this cleanly. The projected output based on available injury information and recent game flow points toward a final combined score in the 208-215 range, with the under hitting in the majority of realistic scenarios. If Embiid sits again, that projection skews even lower — a hobbled or absent Embiid removes the Sixers' most reliable source of points, free throws, and possession resets. Philadelphia averaged nearly 12 fewer points per 100 possessions in games he missed this season.

On the spread, Philadelphia at -1.5 is reasonable if Embiid plays meaningful minutes — the Sixers went 2-0 at home against New York in the regular season and their crowd gives them a genuine edge. But that number is extremely sensitive to his availability. If Embiid is officially ruled out before tip, that line should move significantly toward New York, and any remaining Sixers -1.5 juice becomes a value trap. Monitor the injury report through afternoon shootaround updates. The total, however, is attractive regardless of Embiid's status — this series is trending toward grinding, low-efficiency basketball on both ends.
