Franz Wagner won't play in Game 5 against Detroit on Wednesday night, the Magic confirmed, after the forward strained his right calf late in the third quarter of Monday's Game 4 win. As ESPN reported, coach Jamahl Mosley didn't sugarcoat it: "It changes things in a big way." Orlando leads the series 3-1 and sits one win from advancing, but the math just got harder.

Wagner is the Magic's most complete offensive weapon. He averaged 20.6 points per game during a regular season already shortened to 34 games by injury, and across the first four games of this series he was putting up nearly 17 points and 5.5 rebounds per night. In Game 4, he had 19 points in roughly two-and-a-half quarters before exiting — and Orlando still found a way to close out a 94-88 win. That's the good news. Cain, who replaced Wagner and delivered two emphatic dunks to help seal Game 4, gives the Magic some wing athleticism and energy, but he is not a shot creator, a pick-and-roll initiator, or a late-clock option. Detroit's J.B. Bickerstaff said his team has to be ready "no matter who they put on the floor" — which is coach-speak for "we know this is an opportunity." The Pistons' defense will now be able to load up, simplify their coverages, and take away the actions that Wagner typically generates for others.

For bettors, Wagner's absence reshapes the Orlando team total more than any other line. The Magic averaged 94 points per game across Games 1-4 — already a low-scoring series driven by pace and physicality — and without their primary ball-handler and creator, that number should trend lower.
