Luis García, a veteran without minor-league options, is the most obvious candidate to get squeezed — though he'd have to clear waivers to be removed. Rookie John Klein, the club's No. 20 prospect, can be optioned back to Triple-A St. Paul, which would also preserve his development as a starter. With Ryan on the bump, Minnesota's team total and first-five-innings lines become significantly more attractive, as he's one of the AL's better strikeout-per-nine arms when healthy.

The Gómez acquisition alone is a moderate roster move, but layered alongside Ryan's return trajectory, the Twins are assembling a more credible pitching staff than the recent injury noise suggested. Back-end bullpen volatility is the persistent risk for Minnesota's over/under exposure, and Gómez is one piece of the answer.
