Andujar's Wrist Fracture Removes San Diego's Utility Depth at the Worst Moment

The Padres placed Miguel Andujar on the 10-day injured list Monday with a right wrist fracture sustained the previous day. Rodolfo Durán was recalled as the corresponding move. The club expects Andujar to return sometime in August, per MLB.com's AJ Cassavell—roughly two to three weeks on the shelf for what amounts to a routine IL stint, except for the timing.

Andujar's absence lands in the worst possible window for a roster-construction standpoint. With 14 days until the trade deadline, the Padres lose a player who had carved out genuine two-way value: DH eligibility, emergency infield flexibility, and enough left-handed bat depth to give manager Mike Shildt options in platoon situations. Over his last 30 games heading into the injury, Andujar was hitting .289 with a .751 OPS—nothing elite, but consistent. More importantly, he was a sunk cost on the payroll, a low-leverage depth piece that allowed Shillar and Machado to manage their own workload in the dog days of summer.

The Durán recall is a competent stopgap—a catcher who can DH in a pinch—but it doesn't address the infield flexibility angle. If the Padres were already considering a run at adding outfield depth or bullpen support before the deadline, this injury removes one of their expendable pieces from the playing-time calculation. They can't move a healthy body to make room for an acquisition if that body is on the shelf.

From a betting perspective, this matters most for San Diego's run-line and team-total numbers over the next two weeks. Without Andujar's bench production and pinch-hit availability, the Padres lose a meaningful percentage point or two from their offensive floor in close games. His absence won't shift a 4.0 team total into territory worth exploiting—the Padres still have Machado, Tatis, and Mérida in the lineup—but it does lower their median run output in lower-leverage spots. Look for team totals to tighten slightly if Andujar's return timeline extends beyond August 10th.
