Nick Kurtz is hitting the ball harder than almost anyone in baseball this season. His average exit velocity, his 90th-percentile exit velocity — both sit top-five league-wide. His barrel rate is up. His hard-hit rate is up. His walk rate has jumped to 22.2%, his xwOBA is higher than it was during his spectacular 2025 rookie campaign. And yet the Oakland first baseman is slashing .244/.412/.412 through the early weeks, with an ISO that has collapsed from .329 to .168 and a home run rate that has cratered from one every 13 plate appearances to one every 30-plus.

As FanGraphs detailed, the disconnect is rooted in something specific: opposite-field power. In 2025, Kurtz was the best opposite-field hitter in baseball — and it wasn't close. He posted a .750 wOBA on opposite-field contact, a mark that beat the next-best qualifier by more than 100 points. When he kept those balls in the air, that figure jumped to .789. His spray chart looked like a left-field fence highlight reel. That skill — going the other way with authority — was the engine behind his 170 wRC+ rookie season. Right now, that engine is misfiring, even as the fuel supply is at an all-time high.

Opposite-field power is inherently volatile. It demands precise timing and a swing path that sacrifices some bat speed to drive the ball the other way with lift. Kurtz's contact quality metrics suggest the mechanics are still sound — the hard-hit rate and exit velocity data don't lie — but batted-ball outcomes have run cold. His ground ball-to-fly ball ratio sits nearly identical to last year, so this isn't a swing overhaul. It looks more like a sequencing variance problem: the hard contact is there, the results haven't caught up yet. That gap between process and output is exactly the kind of regression candidate sharp bettors should be tracking.

For prop purposes, Kurtz's HR line — typically set around 0.5 on most books — is currently priced as if his power outage is structural rather than a cold stretch. It isn't. His barrel rate (18.8%) and hard-hit rate (59.4%) are elite by any historical standard. Bet builders that include Kurtz to hit a HR, or alt total bases lines set at 1.5, carry meaningful positive expected value right now precisely because the market is anchored to his surface-level slash line rather than the underlying contact quality. His total bases prop is similarly suppressed. In a full-count, well-hit environment, regression to even 70% of his 2025 power output would represent a significant correction from where he sits today.

The team-level angle is also worth watching. Oakland's offense has leaned heavily on Kurtz's presence in the lineup to drive run-scoring opportunities. When his power isn't translating, the Athletics' team total ceiling compresses. But that's a temporary dynamic. As Kurtz's batted-ball luck normalizes — and the underlying data says it will — Oakland's run-scoring upside gets re-rated upward. For now, single-game A's team totals set in the 3.5–4.5 range may be undervaluing what this lineup can do once Kurtz starts converting his elite contact into the extra-base hits his Statcast profile already deserves.
